Permalinks

The ability to create a shortcut to application data is crucial if you are building a true web 2.0 experience. Data shortcuts (also known as permalinks) allow users to create new data processing techniques and workflow patterns.

The screenshot below shows creation of a permalink in action:

image

A permalink is created when you select a master record on the page and click Permalink hyperlink on the membership bar of your application.

Copy the link to the clipboard and paste it for further use and reference. You can also create an instant browser bookmark to your data if you click on Add to Favorites button. The bookmark title will automatically include some of the data from the summary of the selected record.

image

If you paste the link in a web browser then you will be instantly redirected to the corresponding page of your application with the record selected when the page is displayed. If you are not signed in then a prompt to authenticate will be presented to protect data referenced by permalink from unauthorized access.

Building ASP.NET+AJAX Appointment Manager

Suppose that you need to create an appointment manager for your business. You have a receptionist in the front office and salesmen ready to service customers. Whenever a customer comes in requesting a consultation, the receptionist will make an appointment in the Appointment Manager. The next automatically assigned salesman will be rotated by the application. If a customer requests a specific salesman, then that appointment will not affect the rotation process.

When a new appointment is created, the salesman that performed the smallest number of appointments will be assigned. The rotation process will ensure fair distribution of appointments.

We will show you how to create an ASP.NET+AJAX Appointment Manager web application generated with Code OnTime and enhanced in Visual Web Developer.

Hiding Lookup Details Shortcut

Q. How can I hide the "arrow in circle" icon in a grid, create form and edit form, so that, a user cannot go to the detail page. Ideally, I would like to see this controlled by a role. How can I accomplish this with Code OnTime Designer?

Bill W

A.

There is no role-based control for the lookup details shortcut (object reference) icon. Two object references are visible in the picture below.

You can “hide” the shortcuts as follows.

1. Create file StyleSheet1.css under ~/App_Themes/[Namespace] folder of your project where [Namespace] is the name of the folder with _Layout.skin file. The name of the file is arbitrary.

2. Open the CSS file in Visual Studio or Notepad and enter the following text:

span.ObjectRef
{
    display:none;
}
This will ensure that all object references in your application are hidden.

You can also hide object references on specific pages only.

For example, if you have a page ~/Pages/Products.aspx then you can hide object references on this page only if you CSS rule is defined as follows:

.pages_products_aspx span.ObjectRef
{
    display:none;
}
