DB2 Sample Web Application

The database server DB2 Express-C, provided by IBM, comes with a database called “SAMPLE”. Let’s use Code On Time web application generator to create a web app straight from this database.

Installing and Configuring DB2

The first step is to download the  DB2 Express-C 10.1.2 for Windows 64-bit from the IBM website.

When the download is complete, run the executable. Follow the steps to install DB2 on your computer.

Creating a Web Application

Start the web app generator and click on the Create a new web application link on the start page. On the New Project screen, select Web Site Factory.

Assign a name of “DB2Sample”, select your preferred programming language, and press Create.

Preserve the default Namespace and Framework, and press Next.

From the Data Provider dropdown, select IBM DB2 .NET Data Provider.

To the right of the Connection String field, click on the “…” button to activate the Connection String Assistant.

If you are using a locally installed database, use the following configuration:

Database: SAMPLE

If you want to connect to a local database as a different user, use Server of “127.0.0.1” or “localhost”. If you are using a remote database, model your configuration after the one below:

Server: [IP Address]:[Port]
Database: SAMPLE
User name: [User name]
Password: [Password]

Press Test to confirm that the settings are configured correctly.

The connection succeeds when tested.

Press OK to insert the connection string into the field.

Press Next twice to reach the Reporting page. Check the box to enable reporting.

The next page allows configuration of Custom Membership and Role Providers. Leave the default settings and press Next until you reach the Theme page. Select “Summer” from the list box.

Hold down Shift key and press Next to skip to the Summary page. Press Generate to create the web application.

When generation is complete, the web application will open in the default browser.

Custom Business Rule for Duplicate Action

The default behavior of Duplicate action is to execute the New action and automatically copy values from the current row into the fields of the record. If it is necessary to change the default behavior, a custom business rule must be used.

A user can duplicate a customer using the Duplicate context menu option in Customers grid.

The create form will be opened. Fields will be populated using the values of the original record.

Duplicate causes the New Customers form to open with the same values as the original record.

Let’s add a business rule that will add an asterisk (*) to the Customer# field.

Start the Project Designer. In the Project Explorer, switch to the Controllers tab. Right-click on Customers / Business Rules node, and press New Business Rule.

Press OK to save. On the toolbar, press Browse.

Navigate to the Customers page. Activate the context menu for a row and press Duplicate.

The Customer# value will be appended with an asterisk.

The 'CustomerID' field is appended with an asterisk.

This Duplicate action is only client-side. The data is only saved to the server when the user presses OK.

More complex duplication calculations that require database interaction can be implemented with the use of REST (Representational State Transfer) or with the use of SQL Business Rules.

Minimal Membership Provider for Oracle

Requirements

A minimal membership provider requires a dedicated table to keep track of user names and passwords.

This is a sample “Users” table with “identity” primary key. It is necessary to create a sequence and trigger to update the identity key every time a new user is created.

SQL:

Here is how the table may look if a “unique identifier” primary key is implemented. Oracle will automatically assign a unique identifier when a new user is created.

);

User roles are hardcoded in the minimal Role Provider implementation.

Configuration

Create a table in your database using one of the scripts specified above.

Select the project name on the start page of the application generator and choose Settings.

Proceed to Authentication and Membership.

Select “Enable custom membership and role providers” option and enter the following configuration settings.

The configuration maps logical table Users required for membership provider implementation to the physical database table Users. It also defines three user roles – Administrators, Users, and Everybody.
