Enabling Crosshairs on Charts

Line and area charts allow the user to click on a data point to see the value. The chart below shows how the tooltip appears.

However, it can be difficult to gauge where the actual value is on the horizontal and vertical axes. Using the “crosshair” keyword in the tag will enable a horizontal and vertical line that makes it easier for the user to see the value in relation to the chart. The color of the crosshair also shows which value is selected.

The “crosshair” keyword will by default enable a line for both the horizontal and vertical axis. The “crosshair” property can also use the value “horizontal” or “vertical” to limit the line to the respective axis.

Specifying Titles and Axis Labels on Charts

Every chart that has been automatically or manually defined will display a title. This title will be composed using the row, column, and value fields and their properties that have been specified for the chart. For example, suppose we create a curved line chart on Orders page of the Northwind sample app that uses OrderDate for rows, EmployeeID for columns, and the sum of Freight for values.

The title states that the chart shows top three “Employee Last Name”. The value is the sum of “Freight” and the rows are grouped by “Order Date”. While the title may reveal all the necessary information, the title can be better. Let’s manually specify the title by adding the following tag. Note that the tags do not need to be on any particular data field, as long as the correct pivot ID is specified. Open the Project Designer. In the Project Explorer, switch to the Controllers tab and double-click on Orders / Views / grid1 / EmployeeID data field node.

Add the highlighted tag:

Save the data field and regenerate the app. When the page comes up in your browser, navigate to the Orders page. Note that the new title has been applied.

The line chart now displays the new, custom defined title.

The new title will also be displayed above the chart data.

By default, the axes do not have a title applied. One can use the “haxistitle” or “vaxistitle” properties to manually specify a title for the horizontal or vertical axis, respectively. Let’s specify the following axis titles:

Column Chart Type

The “column” chart type renders multiple vertical columns for each row of data. This chart type has many use cases, such as comparing values grouped by lookup values, or showing change over time. The example below shows the number of orders received over time in the Northwind sample app.

To use “column” chart type, add the keyword “column” to any “pivot-” tag, and make sure that it is separated with hyphens (-).

Hovering over or clicking on a column will reveal the data.

A tooltip is shown for each column.

If multiple values are specified for each row of data, a column will be rendered for each value in a different color.

Multiple values will render in multiple columns in the chart.

Multiple values for each row can be seen in the data below.

The data for the chart of count of orders by employee, split by shipper.

Each row can also be displayed as a single column and stack the values on that column by using the “columnstacked” chart type.
